I know it's been a while since I've posted anything but I really needed a place to get this out. Tomorrow my little girl starts Kindergarten. full day kindergarten. I'm sad, happy, anxious, excited for her. She of course is extremely excited. 5.5 yrs ago, if someone had told me this day would be here and she would be going to school, I wouldn't have believed it. To think that the doctors told us that she probably would not walk or talk, this is a very emotional time for us. My little girl is growing up. On top of that milestone has come another. Sophia lost 2 teeth this week. She lost one on Friday and one last night. She was so excited when she told me her teeth were loose. She said Momma, now i'm growing up! I wanted to cry. She's becoming such a big girl now! Thankfully, I still have Connor home with me. He is sad that his sissy is going to school. I know he will probably cry tomorrow. He is so used to her being home with him. I've gotten lots of things planned for him and I to keep him busy. So tomorrow I become the mom of a Kindergartener. Amazing! |

Wayne and I have gotten the kids to sleep finally. Connor had a tough go of it. They are both asleep inside the same sleeping bag. I'm okay with that. Easier to protect them.

Wayne decided we would head out first and check out the land in Kentland. Much to our dismay, the Step Monster and her ilk were already there. But imagine how thrilled we were when we found out that they were all zombified!! Right now, Wayne is dancing on Lydia's dead zombie body singing a little song. It sounds a little like a cross between Ding dong the witch is dead and hey hey good bye. It's quite amusing. He is now letting Sophia and Connor kick the bodies. I am happy Lydia kept this place up because somehow I have wi fi connnection and electricity. The water is working so we have working toilets as well in the big barn. We have the cell phones charging so we can keep in touch with everyone else.

Well there is now a sunroof in the Saturn where there wasn't one before. At least the zombie is dead now. Really dead. Found out that Leslie and Clinton are also at Kris' house. Good thing Wayne packed ALL the guns and water jugs. I will not be making fun of him for making the "go to hell" bag for a long time. Stopped to check on mom and dad. They are fine. Freaked out, but fine. Sparky has scared off a few of the zombies. Who knew they'd be just as irritated by a yappy yorkie as me. LOL Maybe I can strap him to the front of the car.

Once again, that time of year has come. Sophia and I(and probably Connor) are doing the March of Dimes walk. We have done it every year since 2004 when Sophia was the county ambassador. Every year we choose a child to walk in memory of as well as in honor of Sophia. This year, we are walking in memory of Ronan Ivey. His parents are friends of ours. Sweet Ronan was born too soon and only lived a short time but he touched so many lives. Sophia and I set our goal for $500 this year. We are half way there and the walk is in 3 days!!! If you would like to donate, please go to our site www.marchforbabies.org/Sophiasmommy Any donation is appreciated. A little goes a long way!!!! I am planning to Twitter our walk progress as well. If you want to follow along go to: twitter.com/CSMomma

Seeing a friend's post earlier reminded me that I haven't posted my request for donations for this year's March for Babies. Every year for the past 4 yrs, we have walked to help prevent premature birth. In 2004, we did the Walk for the first time. Sophia was only 6 months old. She was our county's ambassador baby. We loaded her (and her oxygen tank) into the stroller and away we went! We've been doing the Walk every year since. The only year I didn't actually walk was 2006 and that was because I was pregnant with Connor and on restricted activities. We still had fun and raised money. This years' walk means even more to us. We have had several friends who have lost a child due to premature birth or labor. We will walk in their memory this year as well as in honor of our own nicu grad. Please take a moment to visit my Walk page www.marchforbabies.org/Sophiasmommy All donations are welcome, even if it's only a dollar. Together we can help our littlest fighters survive!

Christmas is less than 2 weeks away and I am finally getting in the Christmas spirit! I've been working my butt off to get my baking done. I am going to try my hand at making some biscotti this year. I'm going to make peppermint biscotti. Debating if I want to dip one end in chocolate or not. I have almost all my shopping done. All I have left is my parents, my grandmother and Wayne. I did order 2 things for Wayne so I'm almost done there. I have NO clue what to get my grandmother. I think for my parents they are getting a gift certificate. easy peasy. I had started a photobook for them, but I don't think I will get it done in time. Maybe if I work on it tonight I can have it here in time. We'll see. We, as a family, have done a good thing in the spirit of the holiday. We have adopted a US Marine. Wayne gets a catalog from a website that sells ONLY Marine Corps items. Well they have a program called Adopt a Marine. You can either buy a gift certificate or a gift package. We opted for the certificate. They have a list of deployed Marines who don't get much mail and they will send the certificate(or package) to one of the men or women on the list. They include your name and address in with it so the Marine can write you if they choose to. I thought it was a great way to help support our troops. Plus Wayne is a Marine(inactive) so he knows what it's like to be deployed and not get much mail. I also think it will be neat for the kids and I am thinking that maybe I can get Sophia's class involved if whoever is picked for us writes to us. :) If anyone is interested, let me know and I will direct you to the website. :) |

That is the phrase I heard over and over again from my nephew last night. It pays to have a kid who's popular in school. :) Last night we went to Billy's high school for their safe trick or treat! It was nice. The kids either paid $2 or brought 6 canned goods(which we did) and they got to walk along 2 hallways of classrooms and trick or treat. Sophia wore her Dorothy costume and Connor wore his foorball player costume. Of course last night, he was "George". You see, on his costume is #7. One of the starters on the high school team, George, is #7. So as we're walking along with Billy he would say, "Hook these 2 little kids up. They are my cousins. He's dressed as George". And the girls would put handfuls of candy in their bags!! It was pretty funny until we got to where the real George was sitting!! He thought it was the funniest thing and I wish we had brought the camera so we could have taken their picture together. Of course, he gave them a huge handful of candy as well! LOL After trick or treating in the hallways, they had a little haunted house that was 50 cents. So the 5 of us(billy, sophia, connor, wayne and i) went. Mom and Michelle stayed and guarded the candy and our coats. It was okay for a 50cent haunted house. LOL Sophia said she wasn't afraid of the monsters, but the dark. Silly girl. Connor didn't seemed phased either. Oh and I can't end this without mentioning Billy's costume. Yes, he wore one. He had on a red ribbon bow on his head and 2 pieces of cardboard wrapped in Christmas paper. Each one hung on the front and back of him. There was a tag on each side that read, "God's Gift to Women"! Funny kid. :)

Sophia and I had a "date" today. It started with lunch at Applebees. We both ordered mini cheeseburgers. Hers was the kids meal. She had broccoli with hers, I had broccoli cheese soup. It sucked. But over all the meal was good. Then we had dessert shooters. Sophia had chocolate mousse. I had key lime pie. wish I had ordered the chocolate mousse too. After lunch, we went to the movies. We saw High School Musical 3. It was really good! The best part? Being the only 2 people in the theatre watching it! Good call going while all the other kids were in school. (sophia doesn't go to school on tues and thurs in case you're wondering why she wasn't in school) As Sophia said after the movie. That was awesome!! After the movie, we went to Starbucks. I got a cafe mocha, she got a kids hot chocolate. The lady who made ours was great. She gave Sophia hers and said it was at a drinkable temp because they like to keep the little ones lips intact. LOL I thought that was funny. Then we went to the mattress store to get an idea of how much Sophia's mattress set will cost us. Oh yeah and we went to the evil once upon a child. We bought books. Then we came home. Made dinner. Carved out 2 of the 4 pumpkins. We'll do the other 2 tomorrow. Sophia didn't get to see hers when it was done because she had to go to bed. School tomorrow. :) I carved Ariel into hers. Tomorrow I think we're either doing Cinderella or the castle. We're not sure yet. Tomorrow night we're going to the safe trick or treat!! That should be fun!

Today was Sophia's class field trip! We went to the pumpkin patch! Even Connor and Daddy got to go. It was a lot of fun. When we first got there, they split the class in half. So half went to the petting zoo and the other half went to the bouncehouse. It was shaped like a pumpkin. They were all in the same area, just divided by the fence. I got lots of pics of the kids feeding the goats and some of the kid in the bounce "pumpkin". After that, we took a hayride to the pumpkin patch. Wayne managed to NOT fall off this time! It was fun. All 4 of us got a pumpkin. Good times had by all. Now we're home and the kids and Wayne are playing in the backyard. I'm uploading pics from today and then getting my coffee and heading outside as well!! :) I'll be back later with pics. I even got one of Sophia's "boyfriend", Noah. :) |

Today is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. Please light a candle at 7pm and say a prayer for all those who have lost a pregnancy or child. :( I will be lighting a candle for the baby we lost at 6weeks and one for all our friends who have lost their child. Unfortunately, I know more people who have lost a child than I care to. :( On a side note, November is Prematurity Awareness Month. Nov 12 is Prematurity Awareness Day. So wear purple on Nov 12 and show your support. |

So today we went to Buckley Homestead for their fall festival! It's a living history farm where people dress in late 1700's- early 1800's attire and all the stuff that goes with it. It's really neat. We all had fun...well after Wayne's little mishap on the hay ride that scared the crap out of Sophia and I. So we get our tickets for the hayride and head over to the wagon. Connor is excited because it's being pulled by a tractor, Sophia's just excited to be on a hayride. So we're the last ones on. The driver starts to go and the girl who takes the tickets notices that the steps to get onto the wagon are hung up on the side of the wagon. Wayne, being the nice guy he is, gets up to help her unhook them. In the meantime, she tells the driver to stop. When he does, the wagon lurches and sends Wayne over the front of wagon, headfirst. Some how he managed to miss the wheels of the wagon and came out the other side. Scary. He only has a bruise under his thumbnail and his hand is a litle sore. Another few inches either way and he would have been seriously hurt. I don't even want to think what would have happened if he had been ran over by the wheels. :( Sophia freaked out and started crying. I was close to tears. Connor had no idea what was going on as he was facing the opposite way!! Everyone on the wagon was very concerned that he was hurt bad, but when he came up laughing, we all breathed a sigh of relief. The tractor driver was shook up pretty bad. He didn't hear us yelling for him to stop after Wayne fell off (he had kept going for some reason after stopping the first time). So after that, everything was fine and we enjoyed the day. It didn't even matter that it started a light mist of rain at one point. Sophia had a blast! She got to make a piece of rope, dip a candle and "wash" clothes on an old fashioned washboard and ringer. Then her and Connor got to paint a picture at the old school house. We had fun. I wish we could have stayed later but Wayne had to work today so we headed home. Connor was asleep I think before we left the parking lot. He was wiped out. They have another big thing in December for Christmas and I hope we can go to that!! Shouldn't be bad if we dress warm. :)

Here's an article about Billy's football team helping out the flood victims. The bolded Red parts are about Billy. Dykhuizen is Billy's best friend, Matt.Calumet players help out without being askedBY STEVE HANLON Around noon on the post-storm Monday, seven Calumet football players arrived to move sandbags and help in any way they could. This compassionate outreach touched many who saw it. The players -- Darcell Ballentine, Chuck Carter, Billy Doup, Matt Dykhuizen, George Ezell, Tyler Vanlul and Montrez Wade -- went there on their own. Coach Ivan Zimmer never called them or persuaded them to volunteer. "Here we have kids who don't have much and they went into an affluent community because those people needed help," Zimmer said. "It almost made the old man cry. I was very happy, pleased and proud of my kids." For seven hours the Warriors lifted sandbags and put them down, in different areas. Doup was at the staging area, where he said he lifted and moved about 8,000 bags of sand onto payloaders, which were taken to neighborhoods under duress. The bags weighed between 25 and 100 pounds each. "It was a good workout," Doup joked. "Hey, those people needed help, so what else could we do?" Zimmer, in his 25th year as a varsity coach, said he preaches "right and wrong" to his players every day. For example, one of his players came into the office to call home for a ride. He said, "Hey, pick me up." Zimmer pointed out that the proper exclamation was, "Please, could you come and pick me up. Thank you." Being on time is paramount to the program. Zimmer's saying -- "If you're early you're on time. If you're on time then you're late and if you're late, you're fired" -- has been tested this year and he's backed it up. Five players missed the first half of the North Newton game because of tardiness. "Kids have to know that they're held to a standard," he said. Last Saturday the Warriors washed cars for a fundraiser for eight hours. This week, with the homecoming game against Whiting coming and the team set to ride on fire trucks in the parade, the players went to the Lake Ridge Fire Department and washed and waxed two trucks. "It's sort of a higher calling," Zimmer said. "In today's world rules were made to be broken. Look at the music and movies and videos. But we're trying to teach kids that even if you don't get caught you've got to know that you did something wrong. Life is a lot simpler when you do the right things." That's what drove the Warriors to Munster. Dykhuizen spent most of his day in waist-deep floodwater. Still, he picked up the bags and put them down. "I just thought it was the right thing to do," Dykhuizen said. "Coach is always trying to teach character and I guess it's working. The people were very thankful. A lady named Karen gave us food and something to drink and was nice enough to give us hugs. That meant a lot." |

Well Sophia had a great birthday today! She got up this morning and came into our room and cuddled with us. Then Connor came in our room and he cuddled and was giving her kisses. It was cute. As with every birthday, I made her a special breakfast. I made croissant french toast and bacon. I even let them have chocolate milk with their breakfast. :) She loved it! After breakfast, we just hung out for a bit and then Wayne went downstairs to start cleaning up the basement for their party on the 11th! We figured we'd better get it cleaned up just in case the weather doesn't cooperate for their party to be outside. Sophia loved it because she got to go down and play with her toys. I also let her decide what we had for lunch today. She picked McDonald's of course! I was kinda hoping she would have picked Subway but oh well. After lunch, I put Connor down for a nap and got the diaper bag packed to go to my mom's. We took Wayne to work so I could go to my mom's tonight. My stepsister and her kids were all in town and they are leaving tomorrow. Dropped Wayne off, picked my mom up and we went to the store to get stuff to make chili for dinner. We also picked up cupcakes so we could celebrate Sophia's birthday with all of them. After we got there, Tiff found out we were making chili so she went to the store to get sour cream and cheddar cheese. She also bought ice cream to go with the cupcakes. She's so sweet. :) She's my nephew's wife. I really like her and wish we saw them more. Sophia and Connor just loved her because she was playing follow the leader with them in the yard LOL It was cute and I wish I had remembered my camera. So after we sang Happy Birthday(to both kids) and had our cupcakes and ice cream, Robin and all the kids left to go see some other family before they left. Then we went and dropped the car off by Wayne and Mom brought the kids and I home. Sophia and Connor each picked out a book to read and went to bed with no arguments. :) Tomorrow they are celebrating Sophia's birthday in school. We couldn't do it Monday because there are twins in her class and they did theirs on Monday. Sophia also has to do her "Me Poster" and talk about herself tomorrow. I have to get it finished tonight! Plus finish the cupcakes. Ack! Another late night for momma! :) I don't care. I love doing things for my kids. :) 9 more days til Connor's 2nd bday!! :)

This has been the worst week! First our friends suffer the loss of their sweet baby boy. Now I get a call from my mom telling me that my uncle from Georgia has leukemia and bone cancer. He is going into the hospital tomorrow for chemo for 4wks. :( As if I'm not already emotional this week with Sophia's birthday coming up next week. The week before her birthday is always a hard one for me. I get thinking about what we went through and the 12 days leading up to her birth. I thank God every day that she's here and healthy. She might drive me nuts sometimes, but I love her and wouldn't ask for anything different. *sigh* 7 days til my baby girl turns 5. I can't believe it.

School has been cancelled for Sophia again. I spoke to her teacher tonight. She said the building is fine, but the parking lot is still flooded. Also getting to the school is hard because the main road is closed. We could go around the back way but the road next to the school is flooded as well. They are hoping to resume school on Friday. The cool thing is that her teacher's son set up a "blind" email account for her to contact us in the event of school closings. It was supposed to be for the winter and snowstorms. Who knew we'd have to put it into effect the 2nd week of school!! They've only gone to school 2 days!! When I told Sophia tonight that there was no school tomorrow, she sat at the table and cried. Poor thing. She loves going to school so much and it breaks my heart to see her so sad. Daddy made her feel better by sharing his milkshake with her during dinner. lol Oh and both kids have colds now. Connor was running a fever yesterday and this morning. They both have runny noses and congestion. So maybe it's a good thing she didn't go to school. Tomorrow is my Tupperware party and Connor will have therapy with both therapists. Elona cancelled on Monday because she is slightly affected by all the flooding as well. She was able to get out of her neighborhood but didn't know how she would get back in. Several roads are open now so it won't be an issue tomorrow. better get my butt to bed. Therapy is at 9am and that comes earlier than you think when you stay up late. |

Northwest Indiana is still underwater. No sign of the water receding. I feel bad for the people who's homes have flooded. My little boy is sick. He has had a runny nose for 2 days now and yesterday and this morning he had a fever. Started the tylenol and it seems to be helping for now. Have a chiro appt today. They didn't close yesterday but I couldn't get out anyways. I tried to call but no one answered. They called me about 30 minutes after my appt time to find out what happened. Um. I live on the other side of the flooded areas and can't get out? I told her I tried to call. Have to go to a wake tonight. My great uncle on my mom's side passed away. Don't want to go but it's family so I have to. Oh and for those that pray or whatever, please keep friends of our in your thoughts and prayers. K is having some complications w/ her pregnancy. It hits home for Wayne and I because it's the same thing we went through when I was pg with Sophia. Thanks. |

It's the "great" flood of 2008 here in Northwest Indiana. The Little Calumet River has breached its banks in a few places and the rain finally stopped around 4pm. The next town over is underwater. Not the whole town but a good portion including the parking lot of my beloved Target. :( They've shown footage on the news. Funny how we live a stone's throw from Chicago, but the only time we get footage of our area on the news is when something bad happens or we have a presidential candidate visit. Sophia's teacher called and left a message on my voicemail. School has been cancelled for tomorrow. She's not sure if they will have school on Wed yet or not. Sophia's upset about no school but I told her we would do something school related tomorrow. Think I'll pull out the finger paints or something. She'll like that. Don't know if I'll have a chiro appt in the morning or not. I'm sure they will call if they decide to close. I need to go to the store anyways so I will have to go out anyways. Well I currently have a little boy who woke up a few minutes ago who won't go back to sleep and screams as soon as I leave the room. He's currently laying on my bed watching the sports report. LOL Guess I better go cuddle and put him to sleep. |
